There are days on a shoot where everything just comes together — and yesterday was one of those.

Out on the roads of Mid Wales, we had the opportunity to work with one of the region’s most exciting young sporting talents, Aelwen Davies. A rising Welsh cyclist from Powys, Aelwen is already making serious waves in the sport — and at just 18, her journey is only just getting started.

The shoot was part of a wider promotional campaign for Powys Tourism, helping to showcase the area ahead of the Tour de France passing through Powys next year. And in true Welsh fashion, we made the most of a rare but very welcome appearance from the sun — something that transformed the landscape and gave us the perfect conditions to capture the region at its best.

A Natural in Motion

Despite her already impressive list of achievements — competing internationally, securing national podium finishes, and winning races across Wales —Aelwen brought exactly what you hope for on a shoot like this — professionalism, focus, and an easygoing attitude that made the whole day a pleasure.

That said, one thing became clear very quickly: she is seriously fast.

At times, she was almost too quick for our cameras to keep up with — and definitely too quick for us on foot. It’s always a good sign when the biggest challenge of the day is simply trying to stay in the right place at the right time.

Collaboration on the Road

We were also joined by the team at Tremio, who were filming alongside us to capture Aelwen in motion across the roads she knows so well. Combining still photography and film allowed us to tell a fuller story — not just about Aelwen as an athlete, but about the landscape itself.

Because that’s really what this project is about.

Mid Wales offers some of the most rewarding (and yes, challenging) cycling terrain in the UK. Rolling hills, quiet roads, and constantly changing scenery make it a natural fit for both training and tourism. And when the weather plays along, it’s hard to beat.

Something Building in Powys

With global events on the horizon and homegrown athletes like Aelwen coming through, there’s a genuine sense that something special is building in this part of the country.

This shoot wasn’t just about capturing an individual — it was about capturing a moment. A glimpse of where cycling in Mid Wales is heading, and the people helping to shape that future.

We’re looking forward to sharing more from this project soon.

(Once we’ve recovered.)
